CA | USA | The PCCA: Jan 2011 Speaker : The Pacific Coast Cichlid Association is proud to announce Mr. Spencer Jack ,Winnipeg, Canada, as our speaker on Jan 08, 2011. Mr. Spencer Jack has been active within the aquaria hobby since the age of five. A true "cichlidiot", he had worked exclusively with cichlids for over twenty years. All of his lectures are full multimedia presentations using PowerPoint, and almost all of the pictures in use are original pictures taken by him during his years in the hobby and travels across North, South, and Central America.Mr. Spencer jack is a part of the American Cichlid Association speakers program. "The Gymnogeophagus of Uruguay,"like their Rift Lake cichlid counterparts the Gymnogeophagus species here almost all express a wide range of geographical variation and a fantastic kaleidoscope of colour varieties. This presentation will give a closer look at just the members of this genus from the country, many of which have never been imported for the hobby before. Join us on Jan 8, 2011, at great new location,390 Saratoga Avenue, San Jose, CA 95129. David is a rare man, who not only demonstrates extraordinary talent and creativity in his work, but who also has a deep, intrinsic understanding of nature, aquariums, and the people (us!) who make up our hobby. A kind, warm, and caring individual, he is always open to your questions and dialogue. David is an icon of the aquarium world, and a treasure to all who know him. North American Native Fishes Assoc 2010 Convention
Peter Unmack 801 362 6133 |
NV | USA | The North American Native Fishes Association (NANFA) and the Desert Springs Action Committee invites you to attend the 2010 NANFA Convention to be held at the amazing desert springs of Ash Meadows and other locations in southern Nevada. The deserts of North America provide a very exceptional setting to hold our convention. This harsh environment is hardly a place you would expect to find teeming with native fishes! But despite the contradictory term "desert fishes", if water is present, then fish can and will usually be found too! We hope that you will join us for what promises to be an interesting, educational, fun, and especially unique convention. And, if your family doesn't share your interest in desert springs and fishes, then leave them in Las Vegas while you watch pupfish swim in the sun. | ![]() |

MASI Monthly Meeting
scott bush 314-486-8872 |
MO | USA | The monthly meeting will be Thursday, Oct. 21st, 2010, at 7:30, at the Dorsett Village Baptist Church, off McKelvey Rd., in Maryland Heights. MASI is open to all a”fish”ionados, whether experienced or beginner, fresh water or salt. This month’s guest speaker is Lawrence Kent. Lawrence works on hunger and poverty alleviation issues for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, a job that involves frequent travel to Africa and Asia. During these trips, he tries to find time to look for tropical birds and fish, particularly cichlids. Lawrence has lived in ten countries and worked in another 40 (including 25 in Africa). From 1992 to 1997 he lived in St. Louis and says it was his favorite of all places to call home, because of its good, friendly people, wonderful aquarium society, and spacious basements, perfect for housing dozens of tanks containing tropical fish and reptiles. “Through this presentation, I'll share with you stories of my flash visits to the Kenyan, Ugandan, and Tanzanian shores of Lake Victoria to catch and study some of its indigenous Haplochromine cichlids. I'll discuss the challenges associated with identifying the hundreds of species in that big lake and seek your input in trying to figure out which ones are which”. There will be attendance prizes and a raffle of a Brine Shrimp Hatchery Dish along with eggs. Also a bowl show - this month, aquatic plants Hope to see you there!!! MASI November Meeting w/Rusty Wessel
Scott Bush 314-486-8872 |
MO | USA | The monthly meeting will be Thursday, Nov. 18th, 2010, at 7:30, at the Dorsett Village Baptist Church, off McKelvey Rd., in Maryland Heights. MASI is open to all a”fish”ionados, whether experienced or beginner, fresh water or salt. This month’s guest speaker is Rusty Wessel. Rusty maintains over 8000 gallons of freshwater aquariums in a state of the art fish house constructed specifically for fish. The 90 plus aquariums predominantly contain cichlids and livebearers, which he successfully raise and breeds. Rusty's specialty is Central American fishes. He has taken his hobby to a point where he has successfully collected fish from the countries of Africa, Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Mexico, from 1983 to the present, for over 100 trips to this date. Considered by many to be the ultimate collector, he has introduced many new species of fish to the aquarium hobby. If it lives in the water, chances are that Rusty has either caught it or been bit or stung by it. Dr. Robert Rush Miller, emeritus professor of the University of Michigan named a beautiful and elusive cichlid discovered during one of his expeditions to Honduras, after Rusty in the June 1996 edition of Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine, Theraps wesseli. Rusty is as well a prolific author and photographer, his writings or photographs have appeared in a wide distribution of specialized publications, like Aquarium Fish Magazine, Aquarist and Pondkeeper, Buntbarsche Bulletin, Cichlid News, Ad Konings' Cichlids yearbooks, Freshwater and Marine Aquarium and Tropical Fish Hobbyist. In the organized hobby, Rusty is currently "Convention liaison" and "Back issue Sales Person" for the American Cichlid Association and a speaker participant for the ACA/Marineland Speaker's Program. He is past chair of the ACA board of trustees (1990) and past convention chair (1992). In addition, he is an active solicitor for the "Guy Jordan Endowment Fund" (A fund set up under the ACA to grant endowments for cichlid research). On the local level, he is currently treasurer for the Louisville Tropical Fish Fanciers. Rusty has been awarded with the greatest honor the American Cichlid Association gives to its distinguished members, the ACA fellowship in 1997. Rusty has lectured and judged numerous fish shows throughout the United States, including the annual "Florida Tropical Fish Farmers" show and several ACA conventions. There will be attendance prizes and a raffle along with a bowl show - this month, aquatic critters. Hope to see you there!!! More info: www.missouriaquariumsociety.com/ |

50th Anniversary Chicago Killie Show
Scott Davis 708-747-5913 |
IL | USA | The Chicago killie group is holding their 50th anniversary killifish show this weekend, March 29 - 30, 2008. The featured speaker will be Jaap-Jan de Greef, just back from the Peruvian Amazon. Jaap-Jan, who may be even better known to live-bearer and cichlid enthusiasts, will give a couple of presentations Saturday about collecting killies and we will try a Q&A session Sunday while the auction is being set up. Also in addition to the box sales of killies Saturday morning and early afternoon and the 11 AM Sunday auction, a plant vendor will set up on Saturday. And we will also have a live food table, where starters may be picked up inexpensively. The plant guy (Cory from http://bayleesfishees.com) will arrange a plant sale table. He was at a show sponsored by the Michiana club about a month ago and everyone was quite impressed by the quality of his stock. Since it is a killie show, he was asked to emphasize low and moderate light plants. The Sunday auction time is designed to let guests from down state and several other states leave for home in a timely manner, probably by 1 or 2 in the afternoon. Auction splits for anyone who brings killies, plants, live food cultures or aquarium gear are 70% to the seller. We are also importing a box of quite rare killies from Netherlands. Some of them you may only have seen in the books. It is an open show. If anyone has a pair of killies or a big old stud and would like to see how they would do in a competition, the entry fee of a dollar is pretty nominal and has been the same for three decades. Small tanks and treated water are provided. One can bring their own water if they prefer. The weather will be cool to unpleasant this weekend. It should be pretty nice inside the Downers Grove Holiday Inn Express, on Butterfield, just east of I-355. Saturdays and weekends can be amazingly busy, but it would be great to meet some of you. |
